“InstantT21” by Love Labo

Nathalie Broizat, who spent many years working with multidisciplinary American artist Rachel Rosenthal, develops performance work that took root in New York in the early 1950s around the philosophy of John Cage. Today, she develops its historical roots and its contemporary aesthetic and artistic stakes in France, creating a hybrid and unique style of performance. InstantT21, a video piece for 3 dancers, is the continuation of her InstantT2020 project. In InstantT2020, a piece for 10 dancers, performed at the opening of the Danse Dense festival in March 2020 just before the lockdown, Nathalie Broizat explores the principle of totality in the work of art, seeking to mobilize the intensity of the moment. The principle of totality transforms the moment into a tangible reality.

InstantT21, an experimental video-performance, is the first collaboration between performance artist Nathalie Broizat/Love Labo and filmmaker Jérôme Cassou with performers Anna Gaïotti and Gianfranco Poddighe. These artists got together to improvise on the theme of the pandemic in March 2021. What are they going through? What are their fears and hopes? How do they connect to themselves in this context?

This project brought together two artistic universes: Nathalie Broizat, who works with the absurd, strangeness, collages, and assemblages, and Jérôme Cassou, who works with narration specific to cinematography. Here, the performance that normally only exists in the instant of the experience, by its ephemeral nature, is transformed into an object to be seen and re-seen.

The spectator is invited to watch this performance-video with his/her singularity, to create his/her own experience. Trusting one’s own imagination is the key to the experience. The invitation is to watch InstantT21 several times.

In a living three-dimensional tableau, out of frame, this video-piece deals with the current journey through the pandemic. There is grief, mourning, rage, fear, sadness, and absence. The lack of what we create when we come together in a theatre. There is also play, love, hope, life.
