“La Couleur du Jazz” by Erwann Gauthier | Art-Hop-Polis

After the virtual Art-Hop-Polis series this spring, the FEU is delighted to reopen its doors for the first Art-Hop-Polis of the cultural season. In partnership with the Maison des Arts & Métiers, we are opening our exhibition season with an exclusive preview of the new portrait series “La Couleur du Jazz” by artist Erwann Gauthier. As the month of October is dedicated to jazz at the Cité internationale, the FEU is pleased to show fifteen portraits of Jazz artists.

“This ensemble of Erwann Gauthier brings together all the old jazz ghosts. These familiar ghosts that we love and that accompany us. Sometimes just in the head or on the tip of the lips, because their melodies are part of our collective unconscious and lighten our lives. They are carried in the street, at the bottom of a glass or a look, at your fingertips through a caress or the smoke of a cigarette. Erwann Gauthier’s work is characterized by its obvious graphic and chromatic quality, but above all it shows his mad admiration for jazz, the musicians, the artists who compose his inner mythology. It is his own little music that he generously offers us through the flamboyance of colours and the stylisation of the portraits of Ella, Miles, Nina and the others. The dryness of the line reflects the purity of a note, the breakage of a voice. It tends towards the very essence of this music and the sometimes tragic destinies that compose it. The simplicity of the compositions reflects the rhythm and the requirement. It goes to the essentials, follows the horizon line with the attentive eye of the sailor. Erwann Gauthier’s portraits are a magnificent tribute to the history of jazz, both cheerful and enigmatic, on the surface of the skin and ear.” – Alain Boulerot

About the Artist

Active in the fields of visual communication, graphic design, artistic direction and pedagogy, Erwann Gauthier has been designing, since the creation of Ezz-thetic (graphic design workshop in 2000), many fields of graphic expression such as editorial design (books, catalogues…), digital design (new media, websites, interfaces…), global communication (logos, visual identities, graphic charts…) and compaigns in all media, both public and private. This work, which began a long time ago, is part of a continuity of colour and rythms. “The colour of jazz” reveals an approach that is above all free, instinctive, poetic and improvised, which writes the same story, like jazz: it does not end, always in movement.
