WITHIN US - Musique Classique Noire
On Thursday, May 28th, pianist Jas Ogiste presents Within Us: Musique Classique Noire, a celebration of classical music by composers of the African diaspora throughout history.
Joined by pianist Khalid McGhee, violinist Natalie Darst Xia, cellists Butterfly Patterson and Indigo Ogiste, and soprano Candice Hoyes, with animation by Adela Hurtado, this concert of music for solo piano, chamber ensemble, and voice offers an opportunity to become familiar with the rich and vibrant musical language of composers Joseph Bologne – Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Florence Price, Duke Ellington, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Adolphus Hailstork.
Composers of the African diaspora have a singular foothold in classical music, drawing from the form and structure of classical music, the moving lyrics of negro spirituals, and the diverse harmonies of jazz. While listening, the audience is encouraged to pay attention to the different styles of music that are interwoven throughout this classical repertoire. In each piece, there are echoes of inspiration to be found.
