The Fondation des États-Unis is a recognized "Fondation reconnue utilité public" in France, a private organization that contributes to the public good. The FEU operate seperately from the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris and with full autonomy from the French and American governments. The FEU's aim is to create a space in which young people can develop into engaged citizens, allowing them to be open to the world and its diversity.

Donations to the FEU are eligible for tax benefits in France and the United States; they enable us to develop services for residents, support major cultural projects in line with our humanist and pacifist values, and preserve our Art Deco historical building, which is part of the architectural heritage of the Chancellery of Paris and the Île-de-France region.

As part of the capital campaign to prepare for its centennial in 2030, the Fondation des Etats-Unis is strengthening its art, social, and financial-aid scholarships, broadening its services to support residents, backing Franco-American cultural projects, and undertaking a multi-phase renovation of its building: all to prepare for another century of servicing and providing activities to its residents, alumni, partners, and the public.

A Philanthropic Legacy

The Cité internationale universitaire de Paris was founded in 1920 in the aftermath of World War I at the initiative of the Minister of Public Instruction, André Honnorat. Its aim was to promote peace and intercultural dialogue by bringing together students from all over the world.

In this context, American philanthropists and Francophiles Dr. Homer Gage and Mrs. Mabel Knowles-Gage launched an ambitious fundraising campaign that led to the creation of an American residence at the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris (CIUP). This philanthropic effort stands as a symbol of the long-standing commitment of American donors to international intellectual and cultural dialogue.

In 1928, construction of the Fondation des États-Unis began under the direction of architect and winner of the Prix de Rome, Pierre Leprince-Ringuet. It was one of the first buildings constructed at the Cité and stands as a physical reminder of American philanthropic contributions to the CuiP’s humanist mission.

From the very beginning, the FEU has worked to strengthen Franco-American relations by welcoming international residents and promoting cultural exchange. It has stayed true to the vision of its founders by continuing its efforts to contribute to the public good and to encourage Franco-American dialogue, cooperation, and friendship.

  • Every contribution matters and leads to tangible achievements. A crowdfunding campaign made it possible to modernize the windows and heating system of the Grand Salon. Support from public and private patrons enabled the restoration of the Art Deco frescoes. A collaboration between the University of Chicago in Paris and the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris ultimately led to the renovation of forty rooms. These successes demonstrate that every gift, regardless of amount, helps transform the FEU.

Through the Giving Circle, which brings together Friends, Patrons, and Founders, everyone can find their place within our community of support. Each level provides special access to the life of the house and allows us to express our gratitude, whether through regular updates, exclusive invitations, meetings, or detailed feedback on the impact of your generosity. Together, donors and partners are writing the next chapter of the FEU.
