About the event
“Concheperla: The Making of an Animated Film” is an event dedicated to Concheperla, an animated feature film currently in development by Adela Hurtado. First developed at Gobelins, the animation school in Paris, the film is set in 1960s Trujillo, Peru, and explores themes of identity, colorism, and family. At its center is Poligena, a young street seller who dreams of becoming a marinera dance champion, while living with her grandmother, who is obsessed with whiteness and makes a whitening powder by crushing mother of pearl—concheperla.
The program will begin with a screening of Latin American animated short films, presented in dialogue with Concheperla to offer a broader perspective on animation and situate the project within a wider artistic and cinematic context.
Next, an animatic done for Concheperla will be screened, followed by a presentation from director Adela Hurtado on the creative process—from story development to visual research—giving us a glimpse behind the scenes of making an animated film. The project brings together artistic influences from both Europe and Peru, reflecting an ongoing collaboration between artists across these regions.
A moderated Q&A session hosted by French-Peruvian producer Manuel-Antonio Monteagudo will follow, and the evening will conclude with a performance of Peruvian marinera dancers, Peruvian musicians Le Son Criollo, and a reception showcasing artwork from the film.
Presented by NYU Latinx Alumni Network, NYU Alumni in France, Viva La Animación, Animation Nights New York, Chambre124, and others
