Who is Dayton ?

In his music, composer Dayton Hare seeks a balance between lyricism and color, narrative and atmosphere. Often inspired by the natural world, he aims to raise questions about our relationship with the environment and to highlight the understated beauty that surrounds us. During the 2024–2025 academic year, Dayton will be in residence at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris as a recipient of the Fulbright–Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship in the Arts. There, he will compose musical works developed in dialogue with the city’s efforts to mitigate climate change. He will also study under the guidance of Régis Campo at the École Normale de Musique de Paris.

Previously, Dayton has received fellowships from the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau, and the Norfolk New Music Workshop. His works have been performed by Bent Frequency, Mammoth Trio, the Yale Percussion Group, Utari Duo, and many others. Upcoming projects include commissions for the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Yale Planetary Solutions Climate Week. Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Dayton holds a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, as well as two Bachelor’s degrees—one in musical composition and one in English literature—from the University of Michigan.
