Michael Chapa

Michael Chapa (he/him) is an accomplished artist and educator recognized for his expertise in chamber music, athletic band instruction, and interdisciplinary programs. As the soprano saxophonist of the award-winning saxophone quartet Mixed Media, Michael achieved notable successes, including winning the gold medal at the 2022 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and securing first prize at the Coltman Chamber Music Competition. His group also reached the national finals of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition that same year. From October 2020 to August 2021, Michael studied contemporary music and interdisciplinary collaboration at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Boulogne-Billancourt in Paris, France, supported by the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship. During this time, he collaborated on various artistic projects, such as «Pariétal: à travers les toiles,» which combined video, sculpture, and live saxophone improvisation. Currently serving as the Instructor of Saxophone and Assistant Director of Bands at Southeast Missouri State University, Michael previously taught in Dallas, Texas public schools and assisted with the University of Illinois’ Marching Illini. He is pursuing his DMA in saxophone performance at the University of Georgia under Dr. Connie Frigo and Dr. Brandon Quarles, benefiting from mentorship from figures like Jean-Michel Goury, Debra Richtmeyer, and Dr. Nathan Nabb throughout his career.
