Ensemble Calliopée : Music Outreach 2018-2019

Continuing the Ensemble Calliopée’s project of musical outreach sessions conceived during its residency at the FEU, this year Karine Lethiec, violist and artistic director of the ensemble, worked with Harriet Hale Woolley scholarship recipients cellist Andrew Briggs and guitarist and composer Sergio Herrera to create a new program for hospitalized people.

The program developed in 2017-2018, “Autour des cordes” (about strings), was also played at the beginning of the year at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital, where Andrew Briggs and Sergio Herrera subsequently intervened at patients’ bedsides. They played in the internal medicine and cardiopathy departments to offer a musical moment to patients as well as to families and staff. These musical outreach sessions provide a great opportunity for exchange between musicians, patients and staff. As a powerful vector accessible to all, music has the gift of making each person’s sensitivity resonate, of giving rise to emotions, capable of leading to listening and comfort, to meeting and sharing.
