The summer is often a very inspiring time in an artist’s creation process. For Annette Gonzalez Parra and Mallory Mayhew, resident artists, it directly inspired Reverie, their new interdisciplinary exhibition. They both work with various media – illustration, painting, photography, experimental video – to explore the interpretation of reality versus fantasy.

Noun. A state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream.
This summery exposition shows two artists, two different points of view, and two ways of interpreting reality. Exploring the desire to portray the meaning of duality of life and fantasy. Is expression a form of daydreaming? Through illustration, painting, photography and experimental video, the artists will question their own methods of interaction with reality. The poetic manifestation of colors, forms and textures guide the viewer through a dissociated path, like a stroll through a magical dream.
Mallory and Annette would like to welcome you to this midsummer’s night dream dual exhibit.
The opening will take place on Wednesday, June 1, as part of Art-Hop-Polis.

About the Artists
Annette Gonzalez Parra. Venezuelan photographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Paris since 2016. Annette grew up in Caracas and moved to France to expand her horizons as an artist and gain professional experience in the European capital of movies. With an academic degree in Media Communication and a Masters in Film Studies, she is currently doing a Masters in Preservation of Audiovisual and Film Heritage. Her artistic work comes with a very emotional charge, feeding mostly from nostalgia, memories, gender identity, and femininity. She has explored many possibilities of artistic expression including poetry writing, theater performance and direction, video art, painting, sketching and her principal activity and professional domain being photography. In 2020 during the lockdown, a series of experiments took her towards new mediums by mixing different graphic and plastic techniques.
By manipulating photographs and still images, she integrates paint, pastels, and crayons to create handmade interventions. In this way, the old original photographs would have a second life, a variant of their own existence and would dissociate from their physical purpose to become something new. More recently she has begun to develop experimental film projects where the emphasis is on exploring color and form by integrating these same techniques of mixing still images and animating them. All this to develop a conversation about ephemeral imagery and the nature of transformation.
Mallory Mayhew is an illustrator and graphic designer originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and has lived in Paris since 2017. She has her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She enjoys exploring Paris and learning everything the city has to offer. Inspired by the sights of Paris, Mallory often paints the city of light, trying to capture the magic and energy unique to the city. Through her collage work and illustrations, she explores the feelings of belonging to multiple places at once and wrestling with multiple identities. Combining imagery and life experiences from France and the United States, she works through the duality of life abroad.
