Rendez-vous Musical #70

The Rendez-vous Musical is back starting on October 18th, but reservations will be required. The musicians in residence, who are moving in or returning to the FEU, are looking forward to welcoming you in small groups for intimate concerts, allowing an exchange between the musicians and the audience on the pieces they are working on. This informal concert series is an opportunity for them to present their work, and for the audience to (re)discover classical, contemporary and sometimes even new compositions in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Musicians in Residence

Vocalist Sarah Grace Graves draws on her background as a composer and improvisor to choose the right sound for each moment, navigate vivid sound worlds, and deliver interpretations that feel spontaneous, natural, and complete. Recent engagements include a voice duo set with Cecilia Engelhart (2020), a multi-instrumental trio set with Mitch Stallman and Nayoung Jung (2019), and the film The Evolutionary Traits of Birds (2020), in which she created and voiced the language of a mythical society of Elk-men. As a composer, she often collaborates with other vocalists. Her most recent collaboration, embrace (2020), written for Helēna Sorokina, knits vocal sensations into a hug, creating self-sustaining intimacy, the heart of vocal sound whose absence leaves the voice uniquely vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sarah Grace has performed at Westben, N.E.O. Voice Festival, San Marino, IlSuono, Nief-Norf, Madeira Residency, and New Music on the Point. She studies voice with Nicholas Isherwood.

An international prize-winning harpist, Olivia Kim, has performed worldwide both as a soloist and collaboratively with renowned orchestras, and chamber musicians. She was a featured soloist with the League of Strings on their China tour and was invited to present a concert at the World Harp Congress in Hong Kong. She is a regular guest harpist at the Tamnak Prathom Harp Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, to give recitals and masterclasses. Olivia earned her Master’s degree in harp performance/pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory in 2017 with a full scholarship and was awarded the Harold Randolph prize upon graduation. She currently studies at École Normale de Musique de Paris under the tutelage of Nicholas Tulliez.

Clarinetist Elias Rodriguez made his national solo debut at the age of 16, after performing on a live broadcast of NPR’s « From the Top. » He has since appeared in international music festivals throughout the Americas and Europe, from the Grafenegg Festival in Austria to teaching masterclasses in Cali, Colombia. He is an alumnus of the New York based ensemble, “The Orchestra Now”. with which he has performed as a soloist on New York public radio, recorded a CD on Hyperion Records, and played a concert series at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City. Elias was awarded the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship and an artist residency at the Fondation Des États-Unis.

Flutist Thomaz Tavares has been praised by the Virginia Gazette as a “polished performer, with a pure, direct sound […] embracing the work’s lyrical and virtuoso demands.” A native New Yorker later raised in Brazil, Thomaz Tavares completed his Bachelor’s degree in flute performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under the tutelage of Thomas Robertello with a “Premier Young Artist” scholarship. He later started his graduate studies at the École Normale de Musique de Paris under international soloist Jean Ferrandis, and recently obtained his Diplome Supérieur D’Execution with unanimous distinction from the jury. Tavares is a recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year, during which he will be exploring French solo and chamber repertoire, interning with the Orchestre de Chambre Nouvelle Europe, and pursuing his Diplome Superieur de Concertiste.
