The FEU is pleased to present the exhibition Reflections from Inbetween Wars by artist Tali Gai, former resident and Harriet Hale Woolley scholar, which will open on Wednesday, November 7th as part of Art-Hop-Polis. The exhibition will run from November 8th to 30th.
At the very moment when we are celebrating the centenary of the First World War, in a context of division, nationalism and the rise of political practices of the past, I would like to propose an exhibition at the Fondation des États-Unis which explores history as repetition and rhyme. But the visual investigation that I propose does not seek to illustrate this repetition in a literal way. Rather, I wish to reveal the invisible force that causes this return of the past and render it visible. In this way, the challenge of the exhibition is to not only to open the past to the present but to open the “differential interval” in which history is born and passed on according to Giorgio Agamben in Enfance et histoire. This gap, which is a non-image and a threshold, catalyzes an exchange of regards between the spectator and his or her own historicity. – Tali Gai, September 2018
About the Artist
Tali Gai is an American artist born in Boston. She has exhibited her work in Europe and the United States, notably at la Nuit Blanche (off) in Paris, Novembre à Vitry in Vitry-sur-Seine, the Estace gallery in Paris, the Saint Botolph Club in Boston and Artspace in New Haven. She is a former Harriet Hale Woolley Fellow at the Fondation des États-Unis and holds degrees from the Sorbonne and Barnard College, Columbia University.
