Harriet Hale Woolley

Introduction

What is the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship?

Bequeathed to the Fondation des États-Unis (FEU) in the early 1930s by Mrs. Harriet Hale Woolley, this scholarship is awarded annually to a select number of American artists and musicians who plan to pursue their studies in Paris, as well as to a student of American, French or Swiss nationality who is a psychiatry intern in a Parisian hospital.

Eligibility Requirements

Artists & Musicians

A maximum of 4 scholarships are awarded to American students in a Master’s or above in the fields of fine arts (painting, graphic design, printing, sculpture, photography, cinema) and music (composition, instrument or vocal performance). The scholarship is not available to students in art history, musicology, dance, or theater.

To apply, candidates must:

  • Have American citizenship
  • Be from 21 to 30 years old
  • Have a diploma from an American University or trade school. Preference will be given to students at an advanced level of study.
  • Demonstrate a high artistic level
  • Propose a detailed and original artistic project related to their field of study that requires a minimum stay of one year in Paris.
  • The project must include registration in a recognized French Art or Music school, or in certain cases, affiliation with a school and/or a mentor or professor can be accepted. It is strongly recommended that candidates contact a professor or school before arriving in France.
  • Demonstrate personal qualities and adaptability to community life
  • Demonstrate a desire to actively participate in cultural life at the FEU
  • Submit a complete application before the deadline: January 31.

Psychiatry Interns

A scholarship is also awarded to a student in psychiatry, of American, French, or Swiss nationality, interning in a Hospital in the Paris region.

To apply, candidates must:

  • Have French, Swiss, or American citizenship
  • Be from 21 to 30 years old
  • Demonstrate a rigorous and serious academic background, graduating from an internationally renowned institute
  • Show an exceptional capacity for development in the field of psychiatry
  • Demonstrate personal qualities and adaptability to community life
  • Demonstrate a desire to actively participate in cultural life at the FEU
  • Submit a complete application before the deadline: January 31.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

The Scholarship

Awarded annually, the scholarship amounts to 10,000€/year and a reservation of a personal room at the FEU during the academic year (October-June). The Scholars actively participate in the community and cultural life of the FEU.

During their stay, scholars must:

  • Assure that their working papers and other official documentation are in order before arriving at the FEU, and remain in good standing for the entire duration of their stay (for more information on visas, see the website of the American State Department)
  • Submit proof of social security for the upcoming academic year
  • Keep up to date with monthly payments for their room
  • Respect the House Rules of the FEU
  • Declare their room at the FEU as their primary residence for the entire academic year
  • Maintain a high level of study during their stay and participate in the cultural program of the FEU
  • Mention the Scholarship HHW and the FEU in any biographies and resumes, and preferably also after, the scholarship year
  • Submit a report of their academic and professional background during the past school year
  • Artist grantees gift a work created during their stay to the FEU

Documents to submit for Artists and Musicians

  1. The form for the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship, download here. Please sign electronically or print, sign, and scan.
  2. A passport-sized photo to be used on the form and sent in JPEG format.
  3. A detailed resume.
  4. A detailed presentation of your project specifying the French institution or teacher you plan to work with.
  5. It is strongly recommended to include a letter of admission to a French institution, or in some cases, a letter of from a mentor or professor. For the visual arts, a letter of affiliation. A letter from a mentor may be accepted if the project involves only personal artistic work. Please note that it is easier to obtain a student Visa by registering at a French institution.
  6. A certificate of proficiency in French signed by a qualified French teacher. If your level of French is low, you must demonstrate your willingness to complete your studies by taking French courses before your arrival. It is also recommended that you take classes once you arrive.
  7. Three letters of recommendation on letterhead from professors knowledgeable about the candidate’s skills, artistic qualities and accomplishments. Letters should be sent directly by e-mail by the referees.
  8. Copies of original transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended by the candidate. A high-definition color scan is acceptable the first time the application is submitted.
  9. Examples of the candidate’s work. In visual arts, an electronic file of recent work. For musicians, a minimum of 15 minutes of at least three pieces in contrasting styles. Videos are strongly encouraged (including web links).
  10. A simple medical certificate confirming the candidate’s general good health. Successful candidates will be required to provide proof of health insurance prior to arrival.
  11. Proof of citizenship, i.e. a color scan of your passport.

  4. A description of the internship. Please mention any information concerning the program (name of the institute, name, title and contact details of the head of department, duration), as well as the professional goals for the program.
  5. For those who do not speak French, a certificate of proficiency in French signed by a qualified French teacher. If your level of French is low, you must demonstrate your willingness to complete your studies by taking French courses before your arrival. It is also recommended that you take classes once you arrive.
  6. A proposal for a cultural activity linked to the Medical Cultures cycle (conference, artistic workshop, concert…).
  7. Two letters of recommendation on letterhead, directly sent by email by the referees.
  8. Certified copies of diplomas obtained.
  9. A simple medical certificate confirming the candidate’s general good health. Successful candidates will be required to provide proof of health insurance prior to arrival.
  10. Proof of citizenship, i.e. a color scan of your passport.
